Choose the Right Lawn Mower For Your Lawn

When purchasing a lawn mower, there are a couple of different types to choose from. There are cylinder and rotary mowers, these two types of mower can be powered by petrol, electric or they can be manually pushed. You will need to choose which type of mower is right for your lawn.

Rotary lawn mower

Due to its cheap price, all round versatility, ease of maintenance and ease of set up, rotary mowers are the most common type of lawn mower. Unlike cylinder mowers you can let your lawn get a little overgrown, and rotary mower will still cope with it. Cylinder mowers don’t cut well if the grass is too long. Rotary mowers are ideal for most types of utility lawns, especially if your lawn is a little uneven. They are not really suitable for fine luxury lawns as they do not give the same high quality cut as a cylinder mower. A rotary mower has one or more cutting blades depending on the width of cut. The blade cuts the grass by rotating very quickly while staying parallel with the lawn. It is quite important to ensure the blade is kept sharp as a blunt blade can damage both the grass and the mower. These mowers can be powered by petrol or electric.

Cylinder lawn mower

If you have or desire a closely mown luxury lawn a cylinder mower is a must. Although these mowers are more expensive and more complex to maintain, the quality of cut is far superior to a rotary mower. If you use a cylinder mower you must not allow the grass to get too long before mowing it. This type of mower has a horizontally mounted cylinder with multiple blades that spin and gather the grass against a fixed bottom blade which cuts the grass. These mowers generally require more maintenance than a rotary mower. Like rotary mowers they can be powered by petrol or electric and if you have a small lawn, push cylinder mowers are still available to buy.

Once you have decided on a cylinder or rotary mower there are of couple of other factors to take into account before your purchase your mower.

If you have a large area you may want to consider buying a ride on mower with a larger cutting width to save you time.

The other thing to consider is the power source. A petrol mower is easier to use and they generally have more power to cope with longer grass although they require more maintenance. Petrol mowers are more suitable for larger lawns as you would require a lot of cord for an electric mower to cover the area being mown. However an electric mower is cheaper to run and is quieter than a petrol mower. The main disadvantage with an electric mower is the cord following you and getting in the way, which can be a health and safety concern.

Low Lift – under 3/4 inch. The blades need less power, create less noise and dust. Tractor for 2 acres also increase the life of equipment. Ideal for dusty or sandy terrains where the high lift and a lot of suction are not needed or desired. Dust and sand that are absorbed into the deck may prematurely damage the blades and the equipment.
